Overview

WaterOne has an excellent opportunity for a Distribution Technician to join our organization. The Distribution Technician will assist in the installation and maintenance of all water mains, valves, fire hydrants, service connections and concrete work.  Additionally, the Distribution Technician is responsible for the clean up and restoration of job sites after installation or maintenance is complete.  There are 11 different levels of competency for the Distribution Technician position.  The successful candidate will be offered a position at the level commensurate with their experience and qualifications as outlined in the job description below.

Pay Range: From $21.83/hour

Responsibilities

Distribution Technician I (Levels 1-11)

  1. Takes the necessary precautions to protect WaterOne employees and the public at all work sites and takes the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of WaterOne’s water supply.
  2. Installs, repairs, replaces, relocates, and maintains water mains and appurtenances.
  3. Operates, installs, maintains and repairs fire hydrants and valves.
  4. Repairs and relocates service lines, meter pits and setters. Installs and relocates meters.
  5. Makes water main taps and tie-ins. Restores and cleans up job sites.
  6. Operates heavy trucks and vehicles.
  7. Maintains truck inventory and services, repairs, or replaces equipment and tools assigned to truck.
  8. Keeps trucks and equipment clean and well organized.
  9. Reads and interprets WaterOne maps. Uses GIS mapping system, computer, and plotter.
  10. Locates and records ties on new and existing valves, hydrants, fittings and pipes manually and using GPS equipment.
  11. Performs tests on branch valve, flushes hydrants and runs pressure tests on fire hydrants to determine proper working condition of hydrant. Records inspection information and uses electronic device to record and download data.
  12. Operates hand and power tools and other equipment at work sites.
  13. Operates electromagnetic line and valve box locating equipment. Marks location of existing distribution mains, services and transmission mains for contractors, cities and other excavators to avoid damages to the Distribution System.
  14. Participates in leak detection activities, operates correlator and other electronic listening devices and leak detection equipment.
  15. Performs other job duties as assigned. 

Distribution Technician I (Levels 7-11)

  1. Operates construction equipment in a safe and prudent manner.
  2. Performs minor mechanical repairs and adjustments.
  3. Fuels, lubricates and services equipment at recommended intervals.
  4. Maintains equipment log daily.
  5. Applies all safety rules and practices regarding use of equipment and trenching.
  6. Sets up equipment and operates in a fashion to minimize damage to surroundings.

Qualifications

Distribution Technician (Levels 1-11)

  1. High school diploma or GED required. Post high school education in construction technology or related field preferred.
    • California State University Sacramento (CSUS) Distribution Operator Certification is required or must be obtained within 18 months of employment.
    • Must have or be able to obtain a Grade I Distribution Operator Certificate.
  2. Two years experience in construction and maintenance preferred.   
  3. Requires skill in the use of hand and power tools and in the operation of mechanical equipment.
  4. Requires responsible person of high integrity that can work well with customers.
  5. Requires ability to perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions.
  6. Must meet departmental/divisional attendance, emergency call out, and overtime expectations.
  7. Must be able to maintain good working relationships with peers, supervisors, management and customers. Must be goal oriented, work with minimum supervision and have a customer service oriented attitude.
  8. Requires possession of a valid Class A CDL with tanker and air brakes endorsements. New hires must possess the CDL or obtain that licensing within the first ninety (90) days of employment. Must demonstrate the ability to operate various types of heavy vehicles in a safe and proficient manner in all types of traffic conditions. Must continuously meet WaterOne driving standards.
  9. Must be able to understand utility locates provided by other utility companies and be able to physically locate utilities with hand tools during excavation.
  10. Must be able to understand and operate electronic line locating equipment and leak detection equipment.
  11. Must be able to learn and become knowledgeable about the WaterOne distribution system and the tools and materials used in construction and maintenance of the distribution system.
  12. Must be able to read and understand maps and blueprints on paper and in electronic format.
  13. Must have knowledge of trench safety and be able to install proper shoring. Must be able to recognize hazards and recommend measures to mitigate hazards.
  14. Must be able to work in confined spaces and to have knowledge of hazards associated with such work. Must be able to operate and understand air monitoring equipment.
  15. Must have basic knowledge of work zone traffic safety and the ability to install warning devices to provide a safe working zone.
  16. Requires good verbal and written communication skills in English and the ability to read and to follow oral and written instructions to communicate with customers and co-workers in emergency situations. Must be a good listener.  Bilingual is a plus.
  17. Must have good computer skills and the ability to become proficient with software used at WaterOne.
  18. Must pass post offer medical exam, including drug screen and background verification. This position is also subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Distribution Technician (Levels 7-11)

  1. Must have or be able to obtain Class II Distribution Operator Certificate.
  2. Must demonstrate ability to operate all types of heavy equipment used by District in a safe and proficient manner.

Physical Job Requirements: 

  1. Must be able to move or transport equipment, tools, or other items weighing up to 90 lbs. frequently.
  2. Must be able to frequently position self to help install, remove, or repair various items.
  3. Must be able to sustain operating vibrating equipment frequently.
  4. Must be able to use a computer occasionally.
  5. Must be able to move from one location to another frequently.
  6. Must be able to operate a commercial motor vehicle and other heavy equipment.
  7. Must be able to remain in a stationary position for up to several hours a day.
  8. Must be able to constantly work in outdoor weather conditions.
  9. Must be able to hear leak sounds with and without amplification devices.
  10. Must be able to hear electromagnetic locating devices.

Protective equipment, including but not limited to personal protective equipment for eyes, face, head and extremities, protective clothing, respiratory devices, and protective shields and barriers, may be required and shall be maintained in the sanitary and reliable condition wherever it is necessary by reason of hazards of process or environment, chemical hazards, or mechanical hazard encountered in a manner capable of causing injury or impairment in the function of any part of the body through absorption, inhalation or physical contact
