Overview

WaterOne is searching for a talented and creative (but not too creative) Accounting Intern for our Finance department. This internship will provide you practical and professional experience that will enhance and complement your classroom learning.  This is an opportunity for you to gain real world experience by assisting the Finance Staff on a multitude of duties that impact the world’s most valuable resource – water!

What you’ll be doing…

You will be part of team that manages and tracks over $1 billion in asset!  You will develop an understanding of how our water utility works to serve over 145,000 customers in Johnson County.  You will assist in reconciling balance sheet accounts, preparing financial statements, and capitalizing fixed assets.  You will benefit from exposure to all levels of company management and to the daily operation of our company.  This excellent opportunity gives you the chance to learn from our experts in the field, show your stuff, and be hands-on with a leader in the water production and distribution industry.

  • The successful candidates will have completed a minimum of sophomore year in an Accounting or Business-related field degree program.
  • You must:
    • Possess good written and verbal communication skills
    • Have strong computer and technical skills
    • Be able to commit to working with us for a minimum of 12 weeks (late May through mid-August) Some flexibility for the work weeks may be approved ahead of time.
    • Have valid driver’s license and a good driving record
    • Pass a post offer medical exam, including background verification and drug screen
    • Be able to work Monday – Friday, 7:30am-4:30pm (40 hours per week)

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a general knowledge of generally accepted accounting rules. 
  • Prepares and records asset, liability, revenue and expense entries by compiling and analyzing account information. 
  • Maintains and balances sub-ledger accounts by verifying, allocating, and reconciling transactions.  Resolves discrepancies between sub-ledgers and controlling accounts.
  • May participate in the month-end FI/Controlling closing process including, but not limited to: settling work orders and projects, running overheads and executing cost allocations.
  • May assist in the preparation and distribution of the monthly financial statements including water production and customer consumption statistics and a cash flow reconciliation.
  • May assist in the monitoring for sales tax rate changes for the multiple jurisdictions that WaterOne operates in and assists in the preparation of the monthly sales tax return for the State of Kansas.
  • Assists in maintaining a database on WaterOne’s real property including the market value and tax assessment of each property.*
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must at a minimum be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, and current enrollment in a degree program related to Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a closely related field.
  • General knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and procedures, including FASB and GASB pronouncements is preferred.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks concurrently, meet deadlines, work independently, and exercise good judgment.
  • Must be able to create and maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. 
  • Requires good interpersonal skills, strong oral and written communications skills, and good listening skills.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and continuously meet WaterOne
  • Must pass post offer medical exam, including drug screen and background verification.

 

 Physical Job Requirements 

  • Must be able to move or transport items weighing up to 20 lbs. occasionally.
  • Must be able to use a computer for up to several hours a day.
  • Must be able to use office productivity equipment such as a calculator, printer, and copy machine.
  • Must be able to move from one location to another frequently.
