We have an outstanding opportunity for an experienced Dispatcher to join our team!  The Dispatcher will facilitate workflows for Construction, Maintenance, Valves, and Services Department.  Additionally, this position will schedule/dispatch leak crews, tappers, new service inspectors, valve crews, line locators and hydrant crews.  The Dispatcher will also serve as contact for city personnel, contractors, and general public requiring service from CMVS.  Other assignments include: issuing, tracking, updating and processing notifications and work orders and process right-of-way/excavating permits from government entities.


  • Monitor SAP for work notifications on a continual basis. Prioritize notifications, route appropriately, coordinate with assistant managers and foremen, and dispatch necessary personnel to respond to emergency situations.
  • Create notifications for line locates from WaterOne locate request system. Respond by e-mail or telephone with locate numbers to requesting parties.  Schedule locates to occur within proper time frame and coordinate with foreman/assistant manager to schedule appropriate personnel.
  • Provide two-way radio communication service to all WaterOne mobile and stationary radio users. Interpret verbal messages, relay, or otherwise distribute messages to others in the field or office.  Monitor all two-way radio conversations.
  • Issue, track, update, process, and complete notifications and work orders within SAP. Process packets and distribute to appropriate departments.
  • Maintain log of out-of-service fire hydrants and communicate hydrant status to Johnson County Fire Dispatch.
  • Compile data for monthly Division Performance Measures Report.
  • Maintain and organize department files including Camedia (camera files), Perma log, small tools inventory for each crew, and tool warranty schedules.
  • Procure right-of-way/excavating permits from municipalities in WaterOne’s boundaries. Process payments for excavation permits.
  • Respond to requests for mapping or historical information from staff.
  • Schedule new service connection taps and preliminary inspections. Generate tap and preliminary inspection work orders in accordance with schedule.  Update new service connection information from the initial scheduling through the preliminary inspection. 
  • Provide service related information to WaterOne field personnel, plumbers, and customers.
  • Communicate water outages and street closures due to field crew activity to appropriate emergency services, Notify JoCo and WaterOne Customer Services Department.
  • Maintain a list of all emergency phone numbers needed by Dispatch and Emergency personnel.
  • Schedule and coordinate field line locates with all other utilities for WaterOne field crews. Maintain a computer record of all locate requests.
  • Order and maintain office supplies.
  • Report maintenance needs of two-way radio system and telephone system.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.


  • Must be a high school graduate or have a GED. Two years of college course work preferred including courses relevant to a utility or construction environment.  Must have or be able to obtain Grade I Distribution Operator’s Certification.
  • Minimum two years’ office experience required. Experience in a dispatch center or similar environment and knowledge of field work in a utility or construction-related business is preferred.
  • Experience with WaterOne materials, field procedures, terminology, facilities, policies, and functions preferred.
  • Must become knowledgeable of municipalities’ specification standards for right-of-way/excavating permits.
  • Must reflect a professional and cordial image to customers and employees on the phone and radio.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite of software with emphasis in Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Requires proficiency or ability to become proficient in the use of SAP, GIS, and AIMS software applications.
  • Requires good problem solving skills and attention to detail with a high level of efficiency.
  • Must have superior communications skills and the ability to maintain composure in emergency situations.
  • Must have good reading comprehension and accuracy.
  • Must use good judgment and have an organized approach to maintaining priorities.
  • Must have good knowledge of the WaterOne service area including city boundaries, street names, and street locations.
  • Must be organized and flexible, able to handle multiple projects and move easily from one function to another; occasionally under hectic conditions.
  • Must maintain a good working relationship with all levels of personnel at WaterOne, customers, contractors, plumbers and visitors.
  • Must be able to work overtime in emergency situations.
  • Must pass post offer medical exam, including background verification and drug screen (may not apply to current employees).

Physical Job Requirements

  • Must be able to move or transport items weighing up to 20 lbs. occasionally.
  • Must be able to use a computer up to several hours a day.
  • Must be able to move from one location to another occasionally.
  • Must be able to use office productivity equipment such as a calculator, printer, and copy machine.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for up to several hours a day.
